Annie Graham – Live Lounge

Hi everyone – this week I would like to share with you a selection of Live Lounge performances. If you aren’t familiar with Radio 1’s Live Lounge, the concept is very similar to the Tiny Desk concerts that I shared in a previous post. These performances allow artists to explore new interpretations of different pieces of music, and are usually a mix of covers and originals.

London Grammar – Blinding Lights (The Weeknd cover) (3.5 mins)

This stripped-back cover of the energetic track Blinding Lights really plays to London Grammar’s strengths. The use of effects on the guitar, keys and vocals helps to give a completely different feel and creates a new connection to the lyrics.

Bastille – We Can’t Stop (Miley Cyrus cover) (4 mins)

Bastille change up this Cyrus song through adding elements of other songs into their cover. We hear snippets of Eminem’s Lose Yourself, Billy Ray Cyrus’ Achy Breaky Heart and I Just Can’t Wait to Be King from The Lion King.

Hayley Williams – Don’t Start Now (Dua Lipa cover) (3.5 mins)

While Williams has kept the main structure of this song intact, her interpretation of the lyrics seems slightly different. The original track feels more like a break-up celebration, while this version feels like there are still some emotions caught up in the situation.

Mahalia – Peaches (Justin Bieber cover) (3.5 mins)

This cover of Peaches shows off the soft and soulful quality of Mahalia’s voice. It is a lovely contrast to the original and is easy to listen to.

Harry Styles – The Chain (Fleetwood Mac cover) (4 mins)

Styles and his band keep their version of The Chain quite true to the original, but it is still quite refreshing to hear different voices perform this classic piece.

Thank you for reading and listening through this week’s post – I hope you enjoyed it! Please feel free to leave any feedback or suggestions as a comment on this page.
